How do you set goals for 2027?
Pick one to three goals and write each so a stranger could check it on December 31, 2027. Frame it as something you will start, not stop. Then add four things most goals lack: a reason, a March 31 milestone, a weekly action you can count and a person you report to.
That is the whole method. The free planner below walks you through it one box at a time, saves in your browser and prints on one page.
Why do most yearly goals fail by February?
Most yearly goals fail because they are a destination with no route. "Get fit in 2027" says nothing about what to do on a cold Tuesday in week three. Without a weekly action, a deadline closer than December and someone checking in, the goal quietly loses to whatever is urgent that day.
The research is more hopeful than the jokes about resolutions suggest. In a study that followed people for six months, Norcross, Mrykalo and Blagys (2002) found 46% of New Year resolvers were still succeeding at six months, compared with 4% of people who wanted the same change but made no resolution. Setting the goal is worth doing. The plan around it decides whether it lasts.
What makes a good 2027 goal?
A good 2027 goal is specific, measurable and framed as an action you will take. "Run a 10K in under 60 minutes by October" beats "get in shape" because you can tell, at any point, whether you are on track. It should also stretch you: hard, specific goals reliably beat "do your best" goals.
That last point comes from decades of goal-setting research summarized by Locke and Latham (2002): specific, difficult goals led to higher performance than vague ones, as long as people were committed and got feedback on progress.
Write it as a start, not a stop
In a one-year study of 1,066 people's New Year resolutions, Oscarsson and colleagues (2020) found that 58.9% of people with approach goals ("start running") considered themselves successful, compared with 47.1% of those with avoidance goals ("stop eating sugar"). If your goal starts with stop, quit or less, rewrite it as what you will do instead. The planner flags these for you.
| Avoidance goal | Same goal, written as a start |
|---|---|
| Stop eating junk food | Eat a home-cooked dinner five nights a week |
| Quit scrolling at night | Phone on the charger in the kitchen at 9:30 p.m. |
| Spend less money | Move $200 to savings on every payday |
| Stop being lazy | Walk 30 minutes before work, Monday to Friday |
How many goals should you set for 2027?
Set one to three goals for the year, ideally in different areas of life. Every extra goal competes for the same limited time, energy and attention, especially in January when everything feels possible. Three goals you keep beat seven you abandon. If you have more ideas, park them for the second quarter.
A useful test: could you do the weekly action for all your goals in a bad week, when you are sick or busy? If not, cut one.
Why set a March 31 milestone instead of a December target?
A March 31 milestone puts a real deadline 90 days away instead of 365. December is too far off to create urgency in January, so the work drifts. Ninety days is long enough to see change and short enough to plan week by week. It also gives you a natural review point to adjust.
Think of the year as four 90-day blocks. The day-90 milestone answers "what has to be true by the end of March for the December goal to be realistic?" Our 90-day New Year plan breaks the first block into weeks.
What is an if-then plan and why does it help?
An if-then plan names exactly when and where you will act: "If it is 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, then I put on my shoes and run before coffee." Deciding in advance removes the daily debate. It is one of the best-studied techniques in goal research, with consistent positive effects.
A meta-analysis of 94 studies by Gollwitzer and Sheeran (2006) found that these plans, called implementation intentions, had a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals. Write one for each goal. Pick a time and place that already exists in your week, not an ideal one.
Who should you report your goals to?
Report to one person who will actually ask: a friend, partner, sibling or coach. Keep it short, such as a weekly text with what you planned and what you did. Being asked creates a small, regular cost to quietly giving up, and it gives you help when a week goes badly.
In the 2020 resolution study, the group that named a support person and received monthly follow-ups did best, with 62.3% reporting success at one year, compared with 55.9% in the group that received no support. The structure was simple. If you want a fuller system, our sister guide on daily non-negotiables covers tracking.
The seven lines: life area, the goal (as a start), why it matters, where you will be by March 31, the weekly action, the if-then plan and the person you report to. Fill all seven for each goal and you have a plan, not a wish.
When should you start planning your 2027 goals?
Start in November or December, then begin on a date you choose. In the 2002 study, people's confidence and readiness measured before January 1 predicted who succeeded. Planning early lets you test the weekly action for a week or two, so January 1 is a continuation rather than a cold start.
New dates do help. Researchers call it the fresh start effect: Dai, Milkman and Riis (2014) found that searches for "diet" and gym visits rose after temporal landmarks such as the start of a new year, month or week. If January slips, the first Monday of February is another fresh start. Use it.
Frequently asked questions
What are good goals for 2027?
Good 2027 goals are specific and checkable: run a 10K, save three months of expenses, read 24 books, cook dinner at home five nights a week. Physical health, weight and eating were the most common resolutions in the 2020 study. Pick the one that would change the most if you achieved it.
Should 2027 goals be written down?
Yes. Writing a goal forces you to make it specific, which is where most goals fail. A written plan with a milestone, weekly action and if-then line is also something you can share with the person you report to and review every week.
What if I fall behind on my 2027 goals?
Shrink the weekly action rather than dropping the goal. Missing one occasion did not derail habit formation in a study of daily habits by Lally and colleagues (2010). Restart on the next Monday or the first of the month, and tell your accountability person what changed.
Is it better to have yearly goals or a word of the year?
A word of the year can set a theme, but it cannot be checked. If you like the idea, use the word to choose your goals, then write those goals in the seven-line format. The word gives direction; the weekly action gives progress.
